  1. passwd -d root to clear the password then editing /etc/pam.d/common-auth. Find the pam_unix.so line and add nullok to the end if its not there or change nullok_secure to be just nullok
  2.  
  3. Theoretically, changing it in /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow would be all you need to 'rename' root.
